1. Set up an office environment If you are lucky, you may already have an office in your home. However, most people do not, so they will need to create a work environment. Find a good spot in your home with sufficient lighting and a decent amount of space. You also need an area with plenty of outlets. Try to make a space that will give you some sort of isolation from the rest of your home. You could use a corner of a room or even convert a closet into an office area. Just make sure that you are set apart from the rest of your house in some way.

2. Limit your distractions When you are trying to work at home, you will find that this is one of the biggest problems you will encounter. There has to be an understanding between you and the others that you live with. Find a way to get your point across that you have a regular work day, with regular work hours. Make your work hours known and ask not to be disturbed during this time. Hopefully you will be able to get the others in your home to respect the fact that a home job is just as important as any other type of job, and your hours will need to be respected.

Additionally, you will want to keep from distracting yourself. In order to do this, you will need to avoid things like instant messaging and constantly checking your email. Otherwise, you could lose an entire day without even noticing. You can try to better manage your time by creating to-do lists for yourself. You can even get detailed with your lists and set aside certain blocks of time for each individual task. You could also try setting time limits for yourself as a way to stay motivated. Just set a timer for the amount of time you wish to take on a certain task, and when it goes off, stop working and move on to the next task.

3. Start keeping records When you keep sufficient records, you may be able to take advantage of some excellent benefits come tax time. It may be a good idea to get an online bookkeeping system to help you keep things organized. They are fairly inexpensive, and they will be worth it in the long run.
