I was in a restaurant this past week dining with a friend. It was a sit down restaurant but yet very inexpensive and sort of a quick in and out type of diner. The waitress knows of us as frequent customers. My friend got up to take an important phone call and stood just outside the front doors of the establishment to have the conversation.

It has been estimated that Olympic visitors will contribute 2 billion towards British business next year and providing optimum levels of customer service is where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can steal a march on their bigger competitors. Investing in customer service training is one way that organisations can ensure that their employees have the appropriate skills to generate repeat business by encouraging consumer loyalty.

Racism and prejudice: The work place is no place for racial slurs, ever. Arguably, there is no appropriate place for language which demeans another person based on ethnicity. Beyond a doubt, it doesn’t belong in front of your customers.

It is also vital that all British businesses are accessible and disability-friendly during the Games as there will be an increase in the number of disabled people visiting the country during the Games. British disabled customers generate 80 billion in revenue every year and account for approximately 20 per cent of the country’s customer base so all organisations should focus on improving services for those people with disabilities.

Language: Barriers While cultural sensitivity training isn’t going to help your employees to speak or understand a foreign language, it will help them to have patience with clients or customers who may not have a full grasp of our language. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that when you give an international client the best customer service despite language and cultural differences, you are likely to have won a customer for life.

Sexual Orientation: These days, sexual orientation is a hot button issue, and many people have very strong feelings one way or the other about it. It is increasingly important for employees to understand how to improve customer service to all people, including those who may be of a different sexual orientation.
